“Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn" - Gore Vidal - American author, playwright, and political activist.
I never understood fashion and I don’t get overly stylized photography. Travel down memory lane with me to a time when adult men and women in the late 80s- early 90s were flocking to a little place called Glamour Shots. Every woman was styled the same: sexy cowgirl or sexy call girl. Every picture had the clarity dropped down to nothing and vignetting in the corners. When I look at them now, I laugh and thank the photography gawds for advancement!
This is why personal style and expression of it in photography is important for the photographer and the client. Personal style is the thing that reveals the deepest parts of your personality; it tells your story. Most importantly, tells the world how you feel about yourself and that shows through the lens. Photoshoots should be fun, exciting, but most importantly tell your story. Every person is a storyteller, we do it every day in how we present ourselves to the world-ahem, personal style.
I believe and always will that the process of photography has the ability to transform you, to allow you to reveal who you truly are through your personal style. Whether it’s the photo session location, the hair and makeup, the outfit(s) or all of the above; this is what you as the client want to say about who you are. As the photographer, it’s my job to catch the authenticity of what is being revealed. Here’s 7 ways rock your next photoshoot and do it with your own style.
You have a signature piece that you love and you want to show it off
You understand your style sweet spot
You actually like being the odd ball and work it to your advantage
You know how to play up your strengths (shoot me from the left only!)
You trust your style instincts and that shows up in how the world sees you
You stay away from trends-you don’t want your pictures to look like everyone else
Your size doesn’t affect you-you’re a model babay!
