I have always had this fascination with turbans. Even as a young girl in the 1980s I would see beautiful black women in my neighborhood or in church with these gorgeously ornate fabrics concealing their hair. My mind would question what their hair looked like underneath that sublime cloth. But it wasn't just the turban or what was underneath it, more often than not, wearing a turban also came with a dress code. The turban style uniform was: big sunglasses, a turban, and a flow-y outfit.
And it wasn't just the women in my neighborhood either, stars like Leotyne Price, Bianca Jagger (one of my faves), and the model Donyale Luna often wore them. Donyale Luna wore a pearl turban! When I first began putting these shoots together, I went to every thrift store I could find. I wanted an eclectic vibe (of course!). I had no luck in thrift stores so I found a company in London, UK that makes these beautifully crafted turbans. The company is called Future Heirlooms Boutique. I couldn't wait for them to arrive! When I got them in my hands, I couldn't believe how beautiful they were. These headpieces are so versatile, I tried them on the 8 year old! She loved it! I tried them on the 12 year old and surprisingly, she was fine with wearing them. Turbans were and still are one of the most versatile pieces to have in any wardrobe. I keep these pieces in our prop closet so that any one willing to shoot with us has an opportunity to freshen up their style. Here are some of the bold, eclectic looks we put together using these beautiful turbans.
